comun’Orto – common garden – is a community garden in Rovereto that was co-founded and is co-animated in collaboration with ten local associations, active in fields like international cooperation, education, care, welcoming and hosting of asylum seekers, solidarity purchasing, peace-building, human rights and time-banking.
A first endeavour into the practice of commoning, this was the first attempt to collaborate and build community with other local ‘active citizens’ and to collaborate with and involve asylum seekers living in Rovereto and surroundings. Moreover, after the more ‘theoretical’ approach of Circolo del Suolo, it was a first experimental attempt at ‘commoning for real’, making in common, working together, in order to design and collectively run a community garden. It was also a first collaboration with local institutions (like the municipality of Rovereto) and a first successful grant-application process.
Apart from being structured as a quite conventional community garden, comun’Orto hosts weekly collective working sessions in the garden with asylum seekers as part of their professionalising path; educational activities around sustainable agriculture with children and adolescents from kindergarten to high school; permaculture and agro-ecology courses for adults; public events like presentations, convivial events with food and music, birthday parties, workshops etc.
As Brave New Alps, we were intensively involved in the initial phase of the project (its design, organisation, phasing and physical construction), which now continues without us being too much involved, with new energies coming in from several commoners from Rovereto.
